Texas was the 28th state to join the union. It is currently the second largest state, both in population and area. In addition to bordering Mexico, it borders the states of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Austin is the capital of Texas.
Before European explorers began inhabiting Texas, there were a number of Native American tribes who called the state home. Such tribes included the Apache, Choctaw, Wichita, Caddo, Bidai, Comanche, and Kickapoo. A matter of fact, the name “Texas” comes from the Caddoan language and means “allies” or “friends”.
